During lockdown periods, many drivers have drastically reduced the use of their vehicles. It’s important to remember that cars and vans may actually need more maintenance when infrequently used, and A1 Tyres & Autocentres are open and Covid-safe as usual to keep you running smoothly and safely.

We offer professional, detailed servicing packages in the form of our Bronze, Silver and Gold Service Plans, but until you can pop in to see the experts, we thought we’d share a few handy hints on how to keep on top of the basics!

Keep Your Battery Charged – All car batteries will gradually discharge over time, especially in colder weather. The best way to keep you battery charged is to drive your car regularly for at least 30 minutes or so, preferably at least once a fortnight. Keep Moving Parts Lubricated – This can be achieved in the same way as keeping your battery charged; giving your vehicle a decent run as often as you can. This keeps the transmission, brakes and other moving parts properly lubricated and stops seals drying out, oils settling and fluids separating.

Check Your Tyres Regularly - Tyres gradually lose pressure over time, so even when you’re using your vehicle regularly, it’s important to keep an eye on them. This is doubly important during periods of infrequent use; left standing, tyres can develop flat spots where they contact the road, which might mean having to replace them before their time. Fortunately, if you follow the above advice, you should be able to avoid this; a regular driving schedule to keep your battery topped-up and your car lubricated will also help to avoid flat spots. Remember; at A1 Tyres & Autocentres, we offer a FREE TYRE CHECK, and we’ll also check and adjust your tyre pressures free of charge.

Be Mindful Where You Park - Try to park on the pavement or on gravel where possible; grass and dirt allows moisture to seep up into your vehicle’s undercarriage, which could lead to rust. In addition, try not to park beneath areas where birds are likely to congregate; bird droppings can cause significant damage to your paintwork over time!

Keep You Tank Topped-Off – Topping off your tank before parking for long periods of time is good for two reasons; firstly, it stops moisture from accumulating in the tank and mixing with the fuel, and secondly, it prevents the build-up of potentially hazardous fumes.

Always remember to have your vehicles checked regularly by the professionals at A1 Tyres & Autocentres, even if you diligently maintain your own service routine! Nothing replaces a trained expert, and there’s no one more expert than us!
